Both married and unmarried couples must consult a notary public because a custom notarial deed is needed for the treatment. In addition, the notary public will provide them with information on the related legal aspects. We would be happy to refer you to our recommended notary public.
The eggs of a donor may be used if the woman who is to become pregnant cannot conceive and is under the age of 45 when treatment begins.
Subject to certain conditions, you can opt for a private donor you know (referred to as a known donor) or for an anonymous donation (i.e., frozen donor eggs from an egg bank). The donor may not be older than 30 years of age at the time of egg retrieval.
In order to exclude health risks for the recipient and the desired child, the intended parents will also need to undergo a number of tests. These include routine gynaecological examinations, blood tests, as well as swab and urine tests from both partners. The donor will also be required to undergo several specialised examinations.
In a treatment involving frozen eggs, the recipient will be hormonally prepared for the planned embryo transfer once all the test results are available. To prepare for the embryo transfer, the frozen eggs will first need to be thawed, then fertilised with the partner's sperm, and then cultured, ideally enabling blastocyst transfer (Day 5 Transfer). If the now fertilised eggs or embryos are of good quality at the blastocyte stage, they can be frozen again without any issues.
When using a known donor, the treatment process for both the donor and the recipient is carefully planned and prepared to avoid the need for the egg cells to be refrozen before the planned embryo transfer. So, when all the test results are available, the donor will receive hormonal stimulation and will be prepared for puncture (egg retrieval) once the follicles have reached a certain size. At around the same time, the recipient will be prepared for the embryo transfer, so that a "fresh" transfer can be performed. This requires careful planning and optimal timing.
The likelihood of achieving a pregnancy is typically very high when young, donated eggs are used. However, using "young" eggs is only one of several factors that play a role in achieving a pregnancy. The recipient's hormonal status, the condition of the uterus, lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol, stress, etc.), age, the results of the male partner's semen analysis, as well as psychological aspects are all significant variables that critically impact the success of egg donation.
In accordance with a Europe-wide evaluation of ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology), the average pregnancy rate after egg donation is 49.6% (ART fact sheet 2018; ESHRE), a figure that aligns with our own experience.
